Embedding Special Characters in HTML Text

Typing symbols such as Copyright or Registered Trademark within marketing copy is a frequent need. Depending on the software application, operating system, version and frequency of use, this problem must be approached appropriately. In this article we are including some special characters that can be used with HTML for viewing on a standard browser with a standard font.

The special characters included here are properly known as character entities and come in two forms, numeric and symbolic. In both cases, the coding for these characters always begins with an ampersand (&) and ends in a semi-colon. In the case of numeric entities, a hash symbol immediately follows the ampersand.

Below is a list of special characters that will work with any standard font.
