In
the past few years, product information management and catalog
publishing systems have focused mainly on delivering content
to web and print catalogs. This strategy has paid off because
printed catalogs and sales brochures contributed significantly
in educating buyers and convincing them to shop online. This
time-tested multi-channel strategy has gone through many cycles
of evolution and now time is ripe to include tablet computers.
Let's consider just a single product
within this genre of tablets: Apple's iPad. This device alone
sold 4.5 million units in its first quarter, and over 15 million
units through January 2011. As a result, the iPad is the consumer
electronics device with the fastest adoption rate of all time,
easily outpacing the second-place iPhone. Keep in mind the
iPad is just one tablet device-albeit the most popular. There
are now rivals in the market such as the Motorola Xoom, the
Samsung Galaxy, the Blackberry Playbook…even Apple's own iPad
2!
One major reason for their massive
popularity is that they are more comfortable to carry than
notebooks with their more convenient form factor. Another
is while their large touchscreens are easy to use, they don't
strain the eyes with extended use.
For catalogers, tablets are unique
in that they fall somewhere in between print and web. The
large, high-resolution glossy screen can display a catalog
at a quality and interactivity unachievable even by print…not
to mention, at a fraction of the cost. At the same time, it
can display up-to-the-minute pricing due to its connectivity.
The general idea is to keep the branding of the cataloger
on a tablet, while content is delivered in a fully automated
fashion.
At Apsiva, we firmly recognize
the importance of this emerging technology. We are working
closely with different tablet devices to deliver solutions
for manufacturers, distributors and catalogers that have recognized
their need to deliver content to this new channel. Our goal
is to achieve targeted data through tablets with the latest
and most accurate product information. As we move forward,
we will continually measure the effectiveness of this new
channel and adjust our approach as the technology continues
to develop and evolve.
